God’s way of guidance

“And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them” (Isa. 42:16).

“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left” (Isa. 30:21).

Do we inquire whether the Lord directs His children still as in old time? Undoubtedly He does, though not by any audible voice, yet with equal certainty and evidence. This He does commonly by closing up inwardly or outwardly all other ways, and leaving only one open to us. And is not this equivalent to our hearing a voice behind us? When He inwardly leads us, He impresses a Scriptural conviction on the judgment as to what we ought to do, and it is scarcely possible for us any longer to hesitate. Would our feelings lead us a different course? Then peace immediately departs and such disquietude arises within us, that we are compelled to retrace our steps. When He outwardly leads us, He brings us into such circumstances, connections, situations, that only one way remains open, for we see every other obstructed by visible providences.—James Caughey.

I believe that if you and I were to heed the whispers of our Father, we should not need so many of His thunders.—J. H. Evans.

If we have not learned the habit of committing the daily steps to the Lord, we shall find it very hard to seek His help when we come to a fork in the road.—Spiritual Life.

He guided by paths that I could not see,

By ways that I had not known;

The crooked was straight and the rough made plain

As I followed the Lord alone. . . .

There is light for me on the trackless wild,

As the wonders of old I trace,

When the God of the whole earth went before

To search me a resting place.

Has He changed for me? Nay, He changes not.

He will bring me by some new way,

Through fire and flood and each crafty foe,

As safely as yesterday.
